Maybe you are among the 46% of US workers who don't take all their vacation time from work, or the 54% who check work emails while on vacation.
If you are, that's a shame, because not taking a true vacation can impact you negatively in terms of your mental and physical health, productivity, creativity and more.
So, why aren't you taking that much-needed vacation?
Here are some of the top reasons cited:
โฆ Guilt about leaving others with more work,
โฆ Having way more to do when you return,
โฆ Fear of losing your job
โฆ It costs too much
I get it. Sometimes vacation doesn't feel that relaxing. In fact, vacation when you're stressed about these things can feel about as relaxing as a red-eye with 3-year-old triplets. It's easier to just not to do it.
But you and I both know that all work and no play not only makes Johnny a dull boy, but an exhausted one, too.
That's why I put together a few trouble-shooting tips that might make taking a vacation a bit easier (and more enjoyable) than you think.
Vacation Tips for Those Who Think They Can't Take Vacation.
Tip One: While three weeks in Hawaii sounds like a dream, not every vacation has to be so extravagant. Save money and time by enjoying things a bit closer to home.
Tip Two: Depending on your role, you may be able to find a vacation buddy at your company โ someone who will cover your work if you cover theirs when they go away.
Tip Three: Maybe you've done it already, but if not, talk with your boss. Some will do what they can to help when they understand that you need the R + R, but that simply taking vacation without further planning is difficult.
Tip Four: Consider spreading out your time. For example, taking every Friday off for two months might feel better than taking off a solid week and then not having a vacation in sight for months.
Tip Four-A: If you implement Tip Four, please don't just spend your time doing laundry and running errands. Do things that are fun, or at very least, complete tasks that don't need to be repeated again tomorrow.
Tip Five: Set limits and boundaries at work. Can you say no to a project because you know that it will interfere with your ability to take vacation and take care of yourself?
I'd love to hear from you! What tips do you have for people who feel they can't take vacation? If you do take vacation, how do you manage to do it?
